As much as all these things are not necessarily bad, they are not the primary purpose of the church, and as such should not be our primary and only focus.

Churches are not ready to stand up for or to anything in the society that will not profit the church or the pastor directly. It is even bad how these pastors turn deaf ears to the plight of people who are not their members. Even though they may not really care for their members at least they attend to them for the gain they will get in return.

I was told of a pastor who refused to pray for someone who was desperately in need and was being oppressed by demons. This pastor told the lady that if you want me to pray for you then you must be a member of my church. The lady told him she was already committed in another church and the pastor refused to pray for her. To which he later said, “Baboon dey work monkey dey chop” meaning I only work what I get paid for, that she should go back to the church where she is committed and let the pastor pray for her. Is this not insanity at its peak?

WHAT THEN IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH?

The church is meant to be a training ground where believers are trained, empowered and released into the different spheres of society, to bring light into every sphere of the society thereby causing national revolution and transformation. The church is to equip believers and release them into the society to restore the earth back to Christ.

This was the understanding the early church had in the days of the apostles. That is why they were pace setters and refused to settle for the status quo of their time. Where ever they were, every city they entered, people could not help but know that they had arrived. Because they had understanding of whom they were. They were not ignorant of their purpose. They knew they were the light and the whole earth was in darkness. They knew it was their duty to eradicate darkness.

Hence they were not afraid of fulfilling purpose. The government of the day could not stop them. Death threats could not stop them. Persecutions could not stop them. Imprisonment could not stop them. Difficulties they encountered could not stop them. Rejections and ostracizations could not stop them. Traditions could not stop them. Religion could not stop them. The society could not stop them. They were totally sold out to their purpose, because they had an understanding of their responsibility to their society. They worked in the knowledge and consciousness of their purpose for their society.

It is therefore the purpose of the church to be a light in our society. The church is the salt of the earth. The church is the light of the world. If then the world lies in darkness, it simply means that the church has failed in her responsibility. “You are the
